The planet Ibos holds many islands and continents, with one made of only the Opteryx and Chiropters: bird-creatures and bat-creatures eternally at war.
Magic can be harnessed by any sentient creature, but being able to channel and use magic is rare. Chiropters are one of the only remaining species that can channel, use, and passively use magic. Chiropters harness magic through staffs, staffsplinters, and through their bodies. Using one's body as a conduit for magic is almost always raw and uncontrolable magical power.
Magic is inhibited by heavy metals, and magic users are are weak to heavy metals, such as: iron, copper, gold, silver, arsenic lead, and mercury. There aren't really any others they would encounter in a pre-industrial society.
Raw magic is given off in bursts, used only for defense or offense, such as creating a temporary shield. It is strongest with powerful emotion.
Staffs are used to cast spells, such as to weave clothing with magic, to heal wounds, or to translate languages. Almost anything can be done with channeled magic.
Staffsplinters are wands stripped from a larger staff, filled with volitaile magic. They are only able to be used a few times for powerful spells before immolating in a powerful explosion. They catch on fire and destroy everything in a ten-foot radius.
Although Opteryx are unable to channel or use magic, they use a form of magic in order to transform between their two forms. Opteryx transformation is not inhibited by heavy metals, save for the case of heavy metal poisoning.
